dumplin, Netflix, body positivity, sisterhood

You need to watch Dumplin’ because…
Dumplin’ will have you nostalgic, it will give you the warm and fuzzy’s, have you beaming and feeling like you can take on the world. It will also remind you why YOU are fabulous and should be celebrating YOU more often. It’s a love letter to girls and women. It is so dang feel good that I can guarantee you you’ll carry around that feeling for a few days after watching it and it is brimming with empowering messages that will not just warm your heart, but feel like you can take on the world (because FYI, you totally can). Themes of body positivity, self love and really loving you for you, women supporting women, female empowerment, confidence, standing up for what you believe in, sisterhood and bullying are all explored – see, I told you it was jam packed with empowering Universal messages. It really really touches you. Keep the tissues on stand-by, because it goes without saying that there will be tears.

You need to watch Dumplin’ because…
You can do anything you want to do. There are no restrictions or limitations in life other than the ones we put on ourselves. We often tell ourselves stories that certain things are only for certain people. But, that’s a made up narrative and it’s up to you to change it.

You need to watch Dumplin’ because…
Dolly Parton. ‘Nuff said. One of the prominent themes explored throughout the film comes from the queen that is, the imitable Dolly Parton herself, Dolly once said: Figure out who you are and do it on purpose. I’m going to repeat that… and isolate it so you can really focus on these words. They   are   important.

Find out who you are. And do it on purpose.

Ok, now that we’ve taken a little moment for those words to sink in, let’s unpack them. What do they mean exactly? To me, it means you don’t need to be anyone other than you. And if you’re a little lost, then do the soul searching, wade through the muddy waters and explore the uncomfortable stuff because that’s where the goodness is. Explore you, get to know who you are – we all know in our heart of hearts who we are but it can take a while (heck, it took me till my late 20’s / early 30’s) to really own it and be comfortable with who you are and not try and comply with “norms” (inverted because what is normal and who decided to define it) or second guess yourself. Be true to you, and then stand tall in that. Be proud of you, heck, there’s only one of you and you are freaking incredible (yes, YOU). And let’s be honest, do you ever get to an age where you’re really so comfortable that you never second guess yourself? I don’t think so, it’s engrained in us as women, it’s part of our make up – but, just as Dolly’s quote implies, we need to get comfortable, we need to be ourselves loud and proud.

You need to watch Dumplin’ because…
It’s a story of female friendship. Of sisterhood. Of camaraderie. It’s a celebration of all of those things and a reminder why we need them and why those connections are such an integral part of life. Girlfriends are amazing and those relationships should be nourished and nurtured. Because, we really do need each other and we really are better together.

You need to watch Dumplin’ because…
It’s empowering. Period.

You need to watch Dumplin’ because…
You will find Danielle’s character ‘dumplin’ brave, endearing and relatable. You will find yourself lost in her, right beside her and relating to her in so many ways even if your path looks (looked) a little different, the overall journey is the same.

You need to watch Dumplin’ because…
As teenage girls, as young women, as women… we are not alone in our feelings. One of the overarching messages that it spoke in volumes – and I loved – was something that I feel so strongly about, when it all boils down to it, we are all the same, no matter our age, no matter our background or upbringing, we are all made of the same stars, we all have the same inner dialogue, insecurities and feelings. It’s the perfect reminder that for, she is you. We’ve ALL been there judging ourselves. A reminder that you are you and you are beautiful, you are enough and you don’t have to change and everyone else… literally EVERY ONE else has the same hang ups, self loathing, self deprecating, harsh critique of themselves that you have. Trust me, I know because I do, my girlfriends do.. we’re all in this together. As teenage girls, young women and women we are not alone in our feelings. Insecurity is common – whether you’re ‘average’ ‘plus size’ or ‘tiny’ and I say these all with inverted commas because it’s kinda BS and who decided anyway.

You need to watch Dumplin’ because…
You’re braver than you think.

You need to watch Dumplin’ because…
It has an AMAZING cast of women AND was written and directed by women.

You need to watch Dumplin’ because…
The soundtrack is incredible and ups the ante on the feel-good. You will immediately download it on Spotify and play on repeat, just sayin.

You need to watch Dumplin’ because…
We’re all guilty of speaking like s*!t to that girl staring back at us in the mirror sometimes. We are our own worst critic, we would never speak to a friend the way we speak to ourselves, yet we can come down on ourselves so hard. Why?

You need to watch Dumplin’ because…
It highlights that it’s ok to be vulnerable. Infact, it’s more than ok, it’s where the magic lies.

You need to watch Dumplin’ because…
It’s about learning to be you – unapologetically, it’s about loving yourself – unconditionally and it’s about shining as your brightest self – because, you’re amazing.

You need to watch Dumplin’ because…
There’s a bold, beautiful message that EVERY BODY IS A SWIMSUIT BODY and trust me when I say the scene that explores this will have your inner girl cheering and you feeling inspired and empowered. It’s the clap back of all clap backs to ‘societal norms’ that horrible feeling of comparison and the fact that we even feel that way about our ‘swimsuit bodies’ in the first place.

You need to watch Dumplin’ because…
What I love most? There’s no ugly duckling analogy, no Cinderella story or makeover or fantasy-land-yeah-right-this-never-happens-in-reality-kinda stuff… it’s just real life. Just one big beautiful overarching message that we are all – ALL – beautiful and perfectly imperfect (because, there’s no such thing as perfect) just as we are. Can I get a HECK FREAKING YES.

You need to watch Dumplin’ because…
It’s simply a beautiful, feel-good message that all teenage girls and women alike need to watch and be inspired by. Just trust me on that one.

You need to watch Dumplin’ because…
It’s a reminder to be comfortable in your skin, tell that girl staring back at you in the mirror that she is phenomenal and don’t give the voice in your head, ‘societal norms’, or the haters any time of day.

You need to watch Dumplin’ because…
It redefines beauty. It champions individual and unique beauty. Because you’re beautiful and so am I. It’s no a comparison or a competition.

You need to watch Dumplin’ because…
Your younger self needs you to. It will be therapeutic and nostalgic and remind her that it’s all ok, she did good and everything she went through was ok, because look how freaking amazing she turned out to be.

You need to watch Dumplin’ because…
The themes it explores and the messages it sends out are Universal. You are not alone in identifying, we all do. Honest.

You need to watch Dumplin’ because…
It serves as a powerful reminder of the beauty of empathy, of kindness, of compassion. It reminds us to see through the eyes of others, put yourself in someone else’s shoes and lead with an open heart.

You need to watch Dumplin’ because…
It’s a cue to remember to love yourself. And I mean… we can always do with a little nudge like that.

You need to watch Dumplin’ because…
It cements the fact that we all need our girlfriends, we need our sisters through life because those connections are important and need to be nourished and nurtured.

You need to watch Dumplin’ because…
It will make you think of your sister / friend / daughter / mother / colleague / self and want to grab her, shake her (gently) and head to the top of a mountain and shout out how beautiful / wonderful / incredible / amazing / (blank) she is.

So there you have it. A whole lotta reasons why you need to watch Dumplin’. But above all, because it allows us to see a little bit more of each other in ourselves. For, She Is You.
